At least one-third of people in prison are estimated to be neurodivergent. Yet there’s a persistent assumption that individuals will arrive in the justice system with a formal diagnosis – and the ability to clearly communicate their needs. In reality, this is rarely the case. Many people enter custody without ever having been assessed or diagnosed.
Research within prison settings highlights how easily individuals can slip through the gaps. Many don’t fit neatly into one diagnostic category, requiring a more nuanced approach to identification and support. To respond effectively, it’s essential to recognise not only neurodivergent traits, but also how they intersect with mental health and wider environmental factors – particularly within the unique pressures of the prison environment.

Our Neurodiversity Screening Tool
Our secure, cloud-based Neurodiversity Profiler provides web-based screening tools developed by neurodiversity specialists. This accessible, person-centred system is designed to support individuals within custodial environments and the realities of daily life in prison.
